The plans involve a new site four-times larger includes two full sized pitches, an astro turf area and a BMX track
Plans for Castledermot GAA lands to be replaced by housing and move to a site four times larger have been met with mixed opinions in the area.
The plans include two full sized pitches, an astro turf area, a skills wall, a multi-purpose community complex, various other pitches and a BMX track.
It comes as issues have been raised in terms of pitch availability for the club, with opposing views of concern for the residents of the estates across from the pitch.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Fine Gael Councillor for Athy MD Ivan Keatley said that he was involved in the rezoning of the lands containing Castledermot GAA.
Cllr Keatley said that GAA club representatives had tried to contact "somewhere in the region 12 to 15 different landowners" over the years to try to develop where they currently are, and have "exhausted all of those possibilities".
He added that no planning permission had yet been made for the site, and that people wouldn't be left out of the process.
"It will have to go through the rigors of the planning system, and people will have an opportunity to raise their concerns."
Cllr Keatley also said that he is not aware that the site is sold, and couldn't say "one way or another".
Speaking separately on Kildare Today was Castledermot native Jenny Healy, who spoke on behalf of residents in Abbeylands estate:
"This situation is like a kick a teeth for the residents, the residents are really upset about this."
"There's been almost a total lack of consultation with us," adding that the people of Castledermot have been treated with "total disregard".
Ms Healy said that a leaflet was dropped to residents one night before a meeting and "brought us to a meeting and basically presented us with a done-deal".
She also said local residents were disappointed that local councillors never consulted with them after the decision was voted through earlier in the year.
Castledermot GAA have not yet responded to a request for comment on the situation.
