The plan included 73 social housing units and a community building at Ardrew, Athy, as part of a broader project to deliver 486 homes across the country.
Labour Councillor Aoife Breslin sought an update in relation to the delivery of the previously paused social housing project at Ardrew in Athy.
Kfm News previously reported that the project to build over 73 social homes had been paused by the Department of Housing in July 2025. They had announced it would not move forward with awarding a contract for a large-scale housing bundle known as PPP Bundle 3.
The plan included 73 social housing units and a community building at Ardrew, Athy, as part of a broader project to deliver 486 homes across the country.
However, the department said it had made the decision after a detailed review of the costs involved.
As a recent Athy Municipal District meeting, local councillor Aoife Breslin requested an update in relation to the paused programme known as Project Barrow.
Kildare County Council said the project was progressing and the bundle includes four sites in total, with Ardrew in Athy the only location in Kildare. The remaining three sites are within the Dublin City Council area.
The project is being delivered under a design and build model, with the first stage of the tender process for a contractor launched in December 2025. Submissions have since been received and are currently being assessed.
It’s expected the project will move to the second stage of the tender process later this month, followed by a more detailed evaluation.
Subject to the completion of procurement, a contract is expected to be awarded in the third quarter of 2026.
Kildare County Council says it will continue to provide updates on Project Barrow through its monthly Chief Executive’s Report as the process moves forward.
