There has been progress made on the provision of the first designated bathing area in Kildare.
It comes as Waterways Ireland and Kildare County Council have carried out a risk assessment on potential swimming areas in the Liffey.
It's one idea as part of a list of initiatives from Kilcullen Community Action (KCA) group.
Speaking on Kildare Today, KCA member Tony Gahan said there is a "strong tradition" of swimming in the area:
"There is a tradition going back about 80 years, of swimming in the Liffey, we even had a diving board up to the 1980s, there is a strong tradition of swimming In Kilcullen."
The group have submitted a proposal to the council, based on what they've seen in various areas such as Leighlinbridge and Clashganny in Carlow which are described as "super facilities".
The proposal includes aluminium floating steps and ladders that people can use to access the water.
Mr Gahan explained where the group had identified as a suitable swimming area:
"The area that we had in mind was upstream from the pontoon in the canoe club, with a small bit of work, it could be made very safe and very attractive, we're also talking about benches so people can change, as well as a freshwater shower, which is very important because of the water quality."
He also stressed the importance of planning when it comes to design of a bathing area:
"We've got to introduce some safety into the swimming, because otherwise we could have some tragedy there, because some of the banks are quite steep."
"At the moment they're just walking up the river on the bank, climbing in to the river, which can be dangerous, it needs to be controlled."
An assessor has been appointed to do a report, while KCA say they would like to work with Kildare County Council and the assessors throughout the process.
"Kilcullen is growing, there's lot of new houses here, we have a wonderful sports facility, but this would be an addition, I think it'd be wonderful for young people to swim in a great location."
