The bridge was damaged a month ago

The Department of Heritage has confirmed that approval has been issued to Kildare County Council to proceed with repair works to Caragh Bridge.

Fine Gael Kildare South TD,  Minister Martin Heydon received confirmation today that approval has been issued to Kildare County Council today to proceed with repairs.

Kildare County Council now has the approval to go ahead with the works as soon as possible.

The works needed to be approved the Department of Heritage because the bridge is a protected structure.

A road sweeping vehicle struck the Liffey bridge in Caragh on the 11th of January.

A three metre section of the wall has been knocked into the river below the bridge.

The R409 from Halverstown Cross to Caragh has been closed since the accident.

The narrow bridge is the oldest bridge over the River Liffey.
