Retained Firefighters In Kildare 'Go Dark'

They are campaigning for better pay and conditions.

Retained fire services in Kildare and around the country have ramped up their industrial action.

They have 'gone dark' since 8 o'clock this morning, providing no internal communications other than life-saving information.

Around 2,000 retained firefighters are campaigning for better pay and conditions.

Kildare has no full time Fire Stations.

Newbridge, Naas, Athy, Maynooth, Monasterevin and Leixlip all operate on a retained basis.

SIPTU Division Organiser, Karan O'Loughlin, says they will only respond to emergencies:
