A new outer Dublin Commuter Zone extending approximately 50km from Dublin city centre will be created

Local Fianna Fàil Senator Fiona O'Loughlin has said that she has secured a meeting with the Minister of State at the Department of Transport,  Jack Chambers TD to discuss the implementation of the new National Fares Strategy and how this will impact commuters from Newbridge and Kildare.

The controversial Short Hop Zone is to be replaced by a new Dublin Commuter Zone which will include Newbridge and Kildare town as part of a new national fare strategy confirmed by the National Transport.

Under the new strategy, fares will be made up of a boarding charge plus an incremental fare based on the distance of the journey.

A new outer Dublin Commuter Zone extending approximately 50km from Dublin city centre will be created, which will include Newbridge and Kildare town.

"Public Transport and speaking up for local commuters has been a priority for me since my election to the Oireachtas in 2016 and I have lobbied hard over the years to see the price differential between places like Newbridge and Kildare in the South of the county and Sallins in the North equalised.

"I am pleased to see the NTA publish their new national fares strategy, although there is still a lack of clarity in some areas. However This strategy I believe will go a considerable way in terms of evening the playing field for commuters in areas such as Newbridge and Kildare. I believe it will deliver a better deal for Commuters.

"A key element for me is the new travel zones, which will finally see the long awaited end to the inequity of the Short Hop Zone.

"The establishment of the outer Dublin Commuter Zone extending from the edge of the City Zone to approximately 50km from Dublin city centre is of huge importance. This will include, Newbridge and Kildare.

"The implementation of this zone will have a hugely positive impact in my view," he added.

"This new 50km radius is a considerable change for South Kildare and is something I am pleased to have contributed to delivering.

O'Loughlin concluded, "Whilst the strategy is very welcome, it is just that, a strategy and implementation of the plan will be vital. I have secured a meeting with the Minister tomorrow (June 14th) to ensure that the voices of our commuters in the South of the county are heard at the highest levels of Government, and to continue the campaign to ensure that our public transport is affordable and accessible."
