“Shocking” And “Heartbreaking”: Public Outcry Over Garda Roads Policing Failures

Baltinglass resident and Vice President of the Irish Road Victims Association, Leo Lieghio, has described the report's findings as "heartbreaking".

A report into Garda Roads Policing has uncovered “shocking” findings - revealing that a substantial number of gardaí assigned to the unit are not carrying out their duties and have no interest in doing so.

The Crowe Report, yet to published, found that some of those gardaí showed no concern about being monitored, and that their supervisors were not addressing the issue.

Commissioner Drew Harris described the behaviour as “brazen and contemptuous” and called the report’s conclusions “sobering.”

He confirmed a working group has been set up to implement the recommendations and promised the report will be published in full.

The revelations came on the same day as the Gardaí launched another road safety campaign.

Elaine Byrne, chairperson of the Policing and Community Safety Authority, said some members of Roads Policing appear “very much disinterested” in their work.

She also raised concerns about a lack of performance management, saying some supervisors were either unable, unwilling, or afraid to confront the problem.

“They were in the cars with people, and they were openly hostile to doing their job,” Ms Byrne said, adding that the report shows a deference - or even fear - among management when it comes to holding members accountable.

The review was triggered by a whistleblower who contacted Garda Headquarters with claims that many gardaí in Roads Policing were failing to carry out key duties such as speed checks and drink- or drug-driving tests.

Baltinglass resident and Vice President of the Irish Road Victims Association, Leo Lieghio, has described the report's findings as "heartbreaking".

Mr Leighio's 16-year-old daughter Marsia died in 2005 after she was knocked down while crossing a road.

Road safety group PARC has called for the report to be published immediately.

Its spokesperson, Susan Gray, said it was “very upsetting to hear that there are certain gardaí assigned to roads policing but not dedicated to doing their job.”

Former Garda sergeant Christy Galligan says the force must urgently get to the bottom of the issue.

Meanwhile, Gardaí and the RSA are appealing for drivers to be careful on our roads this long weekend.

The latest road safety appeal has been launched, with checkpoints being mounted all around the country until Wednesday.
