Across Ireland, 267 applications were submitted last year, with the most common conversions involving former shops, services like barbers, offices, and public houses.
Kildare County Council received 38 notifications between 2018 and 2023 for the conversion of suitable commercial properties into homes.
If all the projects come to fruition, they could result in 86 new homes across the county.
The Department of Housing has claimed that since planning permission is no longer required for certain types of vacant commercial properties conversions until the end of 2025, the process has been made easier and quicker.
