300,000 people are expected to attend the three-day event

The National Ploughing Championships are officially underway in county Offaly.

Around 80,000 people are expected to attend the first day of the event in Screggan.

It comes as one in three farmers say they plan to leave the industry over the next five years.

Agriculture Minister and Kildare South TD Martin Heydon says that's something he wants to address:

Minister Heydon has also launched the Food Vision 2030 Annual Report for 2025.

The report sets out key developments under Food Vision 2030 through which  the agri-food sector collaborates to position Ireland as a global leader in sustainable food systems.

This year's championships also come as a new report has found cocaine use is rising rapidly among young farmers.

The Farmers Journal reports around 30 per cent of young farmers are using the drug in the Midwest region.

It comes amid concerns drug money is being laundered and used to purchase farming equipment.
