The water supply to much of Newbridge may be disrupted until the early hours of Thursday morning.
Kildare County Council says a private contractor has "struck a large water main", and that the area affected is so "large" it can't " individually name every specific estate."
It says areas impacted include, but are not limited to: Morristown Cross to Byrnes Cross, Byrnes Cross as far as the Hill of Allen including Milltown, all properties from Sexes Roundabaout as far as Newbridge Golf Course, including Barretstown Road, all properties and housing estates from Sexes Road as far as Roseberry Hill and other surrounding estates.
Repairs began at 4pm, and may not be finished until midnight.
It could take up to three hours for the system to refill and for normal supply to resume, after that.
