There are 46 in Ireland, including 2 in Kildare.

The state spent over €175 million on direct provision centres last year.

According to freedom of information documents, it's an increase of nearly 36 per cent on 2019.

There are 46 direct provision centres in Ireland, of which two are in Kildare - in Monasterevin and Newbridge.

Eoghan Murphy reports:

The government says the system will be abolished by 2024, but Nick Henderson, from the Irish Refugee Council, doubts that.
