Figures released by the Department of Housing.
There are now 2,398 people and families in Kildare being housed under the Housing Assistance Payment scheme.
That is higher than in all surrounding counties, excepting Dublin.
Under HAP, tenants are accommodated by private landlords, rent is paid by the local authority and the tenant pays a contribution to the council.
Whilst just 477 HAP recipients in Kildare have transferred to other forms of social housing since 2016.
