Retired broadcaster Tracy Piggott has completed a 14km underwater swim across Galway Bay to raise funds for Sensational Kids and the return of hippotherapy services in Kildare.

Retired broadcaster Tracy Piggott has completed a gruelling underwater crossing of Galway Bay in support of Sensational Kids, the children's charity headquartered in Kildare.

The 60-year-old completed the 14km journey from Finavarra Point in Clare to Salthill in Galway in four hours and 45 minutes, despite difficult conditions and poor visibility.

Piggott, a long-serving ambassador for Sensational Kids, is aiming to raise up to €500,000 through the challenge.

The funding will help make therapy services more affordable for families and support the reintroduction of hippotherapy in County Kildare, which uses the movement of specially trained horses to assist children with developmental, neurological and sensory needs.

It was Piggott's second time completing the crossing, improving on her 1998 time by one hour and 15 minutes.
