This is up from just one instance in 2025.

Kildare farmers and landowners are being urged to exercise caution with regard to digging in the county.

It comes as two instances of potentially unsafe activity near gas transmission pipelines have been recorded in Kildare so far in 2026.

This is up from just one instance in 2025.

There was also 20 third-party hits on the gas distribution network were recorded in Kildare in 2025.

154 landowners have gas transmission pipelines running through their land, with almost 38,000 customers connected to the gas network in the county.

Kildare has almost 900km of gas pipeline running through the county.

In 2025 over 37,000 requests were made nationwide – an increase of almost 40% on 2024.

For farmers and landowners, activities such as ditch clearing, drainage work, excavation, fencing and other groundworks can bring machinery close to underground infrastructure. Checking the location of gas pipelines before work begins is an important step in keeping people safe and protecting the gas network.

Gas Networks Ireland have highlighted the message ahead of the National Ploughing Championships, which takes place later this month.
