Two men have been charged following the death of a 48-year-old man, who died on a stag in Athlone over the weekend.
The men, who were local to the area, appeared before a special sitting of Mullingar District Court last night.
Paul 'Babs' Connolly from Edenderry in Co. Offaly was on a stag party in Athlone, when he was assaulted on Church Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.
On Saturday afternoon, two men were were detained for questioning by Gardaí in relation to the alleged unprovoked assault.
Sean Munnelly aged 35, with an adress of Irishtown, Athlone and 18 year-old David Higgins of St Paul’s Terrace, Athlone, subsequently appeared before a special sitting of Mullingar District Court.
Both were charged with violent disorder and assault causing harm to Paul Connolly.
The pair were remanded in custody to appear via video link at the same court on Thursday.
