Less than ten Garda driving instructors are currently on track to complete a pursuit driving course by the end of the year.
The Oireachtas Transport Committee has heard Gardaí are engaging with UK police forces with a view to train more instructors in pursuit driving.
Fifteen instructors are training with Devon and Cornwall Police, with some of those expected to complete the course by November.
Senior Gardaí say the five-day pursuit driving course will be available to officers next year.
The force aims to roll out pursuit training ‘at scale’ in 2027, following the deaths of five teenagers in a wrong-way driving crash on the M9 in Moone last month.
Director of Training at Templemore Garda College, Chief Superintendent Brian Sugrue told the Oireachtas Transport Committee the scale of the roll out will depend on the number of instructors trained:
