It comes as there was no back-up for two Gardaí assaulted in Dublin city centre
The Vice-President of the Garda Representative Association has said that Garda resources are "stretched to it's absolute limits" because of the EU Presidency in Ireland.
It comes as there was no back-up for two Gardaí who were assaulted in Dublin city centre.
Much Garda resources are required for events due to Ireland's 6 month period undertaking the presidency.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Vice-President of the GRA and Kildare Garda John Joe O' Connell said that resources are stretched, while also questioning the idea of taking the presidency in the first place:
"We've taken this on, I'll be honest, don't know why. An Garda Síochána is stretched to it's absolute limits, I'm not saying it's a direct result of how those members were assaulted, but there was no back-up and no patrol car in Dublin city centre to go and assist those members."
Garda O' Connell has said that resources "is always an issue" for Gardaí, adding that members need protection to prevent further incidents like the assault seen in Dublin city centre.
"Resources is always an issue, there is more pressure on the individual members that are out there. It's phenomenal work that's going on, but we just need more to protect our members."
