Kilcullen Community Garda Text Alert is holding a meeting tomorrow (2 September) for local residents.
It is to provide an opportunity for people to discuss issues affecting the community.
The meeting is taking place at Kilcullen GAA Hall (R56 YX81) at 7:30pm.
A major reason for the meeting is due to the new app introduced to act as a community text alert for local people.
Cairde is a new service from Muintir na Tíre, designed for use by community groups, and it empowers communities to become safer and more connected.
Speaking on Kildare Today, secretary of Kilcullen Community Garda Text Alert Elaine Anderson-Jackson said that as the darker nights approach, the importance of community increases when it comes to crime prevention.
"We're trying to empower the community, it's a social network, its all about safety and security and it's community.
"We've quite a number of rural areas in Kilcullen, so community is the best deterrent for anything [crime]."
She praised the new Cairde app and it's simple nature, remarking that "if you can press a button, you can use Cairde".
The app allows local people to receive Garda alerts, community group messaging, connection with home security and doorbell cameras to view and speak with visitors remotely.
In addition, users can log key details and photos of valuables to prove ownership and assist recovery if stolen, along with a monitored panic button: that lets you trigger an emergency alert to chosen family, friends, neighbors, and local responders while simultaneously dialing emergency services.
"It's absolutely brilliant, we've tested it ourselves as a committee over the last few weeks.
"It's a social network, it's all about safety, security and there's a bit of kindness in it aswell."
