Jennifer Whitmore says a bus is needed to accommodate students in West Wicklow attending Maynooth University
Wicklow TD Jennifer Whitmore has called for the introduction of a direct bus service between West Wicklow and Maynooth to accommodate students attending Maynooth University.
“I have written to the National Transport Authority and Local Link asking them to introduce a direct bus service between West Wicklow and Maynooth University. This is an issue that a lot of constituents have contacted me about and the service is badly needed for the area,” commented Deputy Whitmore.
“We are seeing more and more students from areas such as Blessington, Dunlavin and Baltinglass choosing to study in Maynooth but at present there are no direct public transport services available for them, with students having to travel to Naas and get a connecting bus from there. Even with this option, the timetables are limited and will not get students into Maynooth for a 9am lecture or home after a 5pm one,” explained Ms Whitmore.
At present, Local Link bus services operate between Maynooth University and Clonbullogue, Edenderry and Ballyteague.
According to Switcher.ie's Student Cost of Living Guide 2024, Maynooth is the second most expensive place to attend college, with it coming to an average cost of €16,942.
The average cost of student accommodation in Maynooth is €692.
