7,166 new cars were registered last month, with 55,207 vehicles sold in the first four months of the year.
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry says while this is up on last year's figures, 2021 sales are down 24 per cent on pre-covid levels.
5,676 used cars were imported last month, which is down from almost 8,900 two years ago.
