It would send a message to people's mobile phones in the event of an emergency, like an extreme weather event
Emergency text alerts could soon be sent to our phones, as a part of a new Government warning system.
It's one of a range of issues that'll be discussed by ministers later.
The Dáil is off this week, but Cabinet ministers will meet as usual today - and are set to approve a new Cell Broadcast system.
It would send a message to people's mobile phones in the event of an emergency, like an extreme weather event - similar to existing systems in various other countries - and could be up and running next year.
Other items on the Cabinet agenda include reducing the maximum fees childcare facilities can charge, which is set to save parents currently paying the highest levels hundreds of euro a year.
Social Protection Minister Dara Calleary is bringing two memos - to extend the Back to School Allowance to two and three-year-olds this year, and to extend the programme that offers hot meals to children during the summer holidays, after a successful pilot last year.
Ministers are also expected to approve a rule change that will force companies with more than 50 employees to report their gender pay gaps to the state portal for tracking from November 1st.
