Fáilte Ireland has warned that car rental prices here are undermining Ireland’s reputation.

Car rental prices in Ireland are as much as 75% higher than other European countries.

An investigation of car rental prices over a two week period during the height of the tourism season in August found tourists here are paying more than in a range of other destinations.

The cheapest small car available during that fortnight was a Volkswagon Polo costing €2704.

While the cheapest family car available was a Nissan Qashquai costing €5464.

During the same two week period you can get a small car to rent for 70% cheaper in Lisbon and Rome.

In Athens it is 65% cheaper, while in Barcelona it is 58%.

To hire a family car for two weeks the price differences are massive again; in Athens, Lisbon and Barcelona you can get a family car for around €4000 cheaper.

Fáilte Ireland has this week warned that car rental prices here are undermining Ireland’s reputation as a value-for-money destination.
