He was taken to hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
A young man in his teens was restrained by members of the Defence Forces and was subsequently arrested by Gardaí.
He is being held in a Garda station in the North Western Region.
The scene is being preserved, and a technical exam will be carried out later today.
