European Central Bank Increases Interest Rates By 0.75%

Mortgage holders on variable rates, are being urged to shop around for a lower fixed rate.

The European Central Bank has raised its interest rates by an unprecedented 0.75 per cent, in a big disappointment to mortgage-holders.

It will add 900 euro to the annual cost of repayments for a typical tracker mortgage.

The ECB increased rates by 0.5 per cent in July - but that wasn't passed on to variable mortgage-holders by the main banks here.

Banks here have yet to decide whether they're passing this one on.

The President of the European Central Bank, Christine Legarde, says inflation will drop eventually:
