Former Kilkenny hurling star DJ Carey has pleaded guilty to ten charges of deception, after being accused of falsely claiming to have cancer and soliciting payments for non-existent treatment.
Mr. Carey, with an address at The Drive, Newtown, Maynooth had been due to stand trial today but entered the guilty plea at the start of proceedings.
His barrister told the court that Mr Carey is dealing with “genuine and significant health issues” and is expected to undergo surgery.
The court also heard he is experiencing “significant mental health difficulties” according to the Irish Independent.
Sentencing has been adjourned until October 29th.
