It's believed it involved a car travelling the wrong way on the M6.

"It happened at Poolboy near Ballinasloe at around 7.40pm yesterday evening.
Four people have been pronounced dead at the scene and their bodies taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe for a post-mortem at a later date.
A fifth person is believed to have been taken to hospital, however their condition is unknown.
The M6 is closed in both direction between Junction 14 and 15 on the M6 for a forensic examination to take place.
Local diversions are in place.
Anyone who was on the road around the time of the incident or has dashcam footage is being asked to contact Gardaí in Ballinasloe."
