It comes amid growing disruption to the criminal courts
The Minister for Justice is to meet representatives of the Law Society this morning, amid ongoing disruption to criminal courts across the country.
Thousands of cases have been adjourned after criminal defence solicitors withdrew their legal aid services in a dispute over fees.
The meeting between Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan and representatives of the Law Society will take place at the Department of Justice at 9 o’clock this morning.
It comes amid growing disruption to the criminal courts, following the introduction of a new flat-fee payment model for criminal legal aid on July 1st.
Many criminal defence solicitors have withdrawn their services in protest, resulting in thousands of cases being adjourned across the country.
The dispute escalated last week when solicitors extended their withdrawal of services to include custody cases.
Solicitors involved in this morning’s talks have welcomed the meeting and believe a resolution is within reach.
However, they insist the discussions must involve genuine negotiations, rather than simply being a listening exercise.
