An order has been made for the application to be reconsidered
A High Court judge has overturned the Justice Minister's refusal of a study visa for a Palestinian student with a full college scholarship.
An order has been made for the application to be reconsidered, and for a decision to be made within 10 days.
In June, Shaymaa Abudalu was offered a place to study engineering in UCC with a full scholarship.
It came after the 20-year-old, who has lived her whole life in Gaza and lost 11 family members in a single explosion in 2024, scored nearly 97 per cent in her final school exams.
On the 16th of July, her application for a long-stay study visa was refused by the Minister for Justice.
In a judgement delivered today, the Court rejected the Minister’s argument that she should be confined to a statutory appeal, which wouldn't be decided until around September 2027.
It noted an assisted evacuation flight is scheduled for the 23rd of November, and a prompt positive decision may allow her to be on it.
In a statement from her legal team, Ms Abudalu says she hopes she will be able to leave Gaza very soon, safely continue her studies in Cork and make her family proud.
