More than 53 thousand patients discharged themselves from A&E in the first half of the year.
New figures from the HSE show, between January and July, almost 300 people walked out of emergency rooms every day.
The largest number of walkouts was recorded at the Mater Hospital in Dublin with more than 7 thousand 215 patients leaving.
The HSE says some patients had not been triaged, while others were about to be admitted before they discharged themselves
