The comments from the Fine Gael presidential candidate related to Deputy Murphy’s role in an anti-water charge protest in 2014.
People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy is suing Heather Humphreys over what he claims were “grossly defamatory” comments she made about him on a radio debate.
The comments from the Fine Gael presidential candidate related to Deputy Murphy’s role in an anti-water charge protest in 2014.
In 2017, Paul Murphy and others went on trial accused of falsely imprisoning Joan Burton, and her assistant during an anti-water charge protest in Dublin in 2014.
At the time, Ms Burton was Tánaiste and leader of the Labour Party.
The trial went on for months and in the end, Deputy Murphy and the five other defendants were all found not guilty of the charges.
Last Sunday, Heather Humphreys took part in a presidential debate on the ‘This Week’ radio programme on RTE Radio One.
On foot of what she said about his role in the 2014 protest, Deputy Murphy sent the Fine Gael candidate a solicitor’s letter the following day.
He claims the words used were “grossly defamatory,” and damaging to his character and reputation.
A plenary summons was filed with the High Court yesterday on behalf of Deputy Murphy.
The next step is for the Fine Gael presidential hopeful to indicate whether she intends to defend the claim.
