The Taoiseach was invited to visit Ukraine by President Volodymr Zelensky.
The Taoiseach has had his first face to face meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the capital Kyiv today.
Micheál Martin travelled by train overnight and will take part in a series of engagements, including a visit to the Ukranian parliament.
The Taoiseach was invited to visit Ukraine by President Volodymr Zelensky on foot of Ireland’s strong support for Ukraine’s EU candidate bid last month.
Mr Martin will witness first-hand the devastation caused by the bombardment and targeted attacks on civilians during the invasion and occupation by Russian forces.
He will reiterate Ireland’s full backing for continuing sanctions against Putin’s regime, for Ukraine’s path to full EU membership, as well as our commitment to work with EU colleagues to ensure the reconstruction of Ukraine.

In a tweet posted by the Taoiseach this morning he said: "It is difficult to comprehend the devastation and inhumanity of Russia's attacks on Irpin, Borodyanka and Bucha.
"Clear how important it is for women and children to get to Ireland to escape trauma and brutality.
"We stand with Ukraine," he added.
Ireland has taken in more than 36,000 Ukrainian refugees since Russia invaded Ukraine at the end of February.
The Irish State has also given €20 million in humanitarian support and assistance to the country, as well as health equipment and medical donations worth over €4 million.
