They say it is important to observe potential owners lifestyle before making the decision.

The Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is advising against pets being given as a substitute for an engagement ring this Christmas.

The animal welfare charity says its important to check the suitability of a potential owners' lifestyle, to ensure they're able to care for the animal.

Gillian Bird, Head of Welfare Advocacy and Sustainability, urges people to think before making a rash decision:
