He died after being beaten at his home in Sligo in 2022
Three men have been sentenced for their roles in the manslaughter of retired farmer, Tom Niland, who died after he was beaten in his Sligo home in January 2022.
Mr Niland, who was in his 70s, died in hospital twenty months after three masked men attacked him after pushing their way into his home and demanding money.
For his role, John Irving, from Shanwar, Foxford, Co Mayo, was today jailed for 15 years.
The others, Francis Harmon of Killala Road, Ballina Co Mayo; and 37 year old John Clarke, of Carrowkelly, Ballina, were both jailed for 14 years.
In his ruling, the judge described what they did as a “cowardly attack” on an elderly, defenceless man who lived alone.
