Athlone will now face Shelbourne in the FAI Women's final as they continue their bid for another domestic trophy.
Athlone Town booked their place in a fifth consecutive FAI Women's Cup final after edging Galway united 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Alexis Strickland gave Athlone an early lead before Cara Griffin produced a superb second-half equaliser to force the contest beyond 90 minutes.
Neither side could find a winner in extra-time, with Galway goalkeeper Amanda McQuillan making a number of crucial saves to keep her side in the tie.
The shootout proved just as tense, but Athlone goalkeeper Maria Matthaiou emerged as the hero, saving the decisive penalty to send the holders through.
