Irish athletics is mourning the death of two-time Olympian and European champion Ciara Mageean, who has passed away aged 34.
The County Down runner died this morning surrounded by her family, following a battle with bowel cancer.
Mageean was one of Ireland's most successful middle-distance athletes, winning gold in the 1500 metres at the 2024 European Championships in Rome.
She also represented Ireland at two Olympic Games and held four national records, including the 800 metres, 1500 metres and mile.
Mageean publicly revealed her stage four cancer diagnosis in July 2025 and had spoken openly about her determination to make the most of her remaining time.
She married her long-term partner, Thomas Moran, in Belfast last month.
Athletics Ireland has paid tribute to her achievements and character, describing her as an inspirational figure whose influence extended far beyond the track.
