Their win makes them a step closer to ending their 56-year wait to win a major trophy

Newcastle have edged a step closer to ending their 56-year wait to win a major trophy by reaching the EFL Cup final.

They beat Arsenal 2-nil in the second leg at St James' Park to progress 4-nil on aggregate.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admitted the defeat was a difficult one to take.

Newcastle will face the winners of tonight's tie between holders Liverpool and Tottenham.

Spurs take a 1 nil lead into the second leg at Anfield.
