Vera Pauw's Ireland reign ends as FAI opt for new direction

SOCCER

Vera Pauw is no longer the Republic of Ireland women's team manager.

Following a board meeting last night, the FAI decided not to offer the Dutchwoman a new contract.

Pauw became the first manager to lead the national team to a major international women's tournament when the Girls in Green qualified for this year's World Cup Finals.

Ireland went out at the Group stage in Australia.

In a statement, FAI chief executive Jonathan Hill thanked Pauw for her 'hard work and commitment' and described the future as 'bright for women and girls' football'.

Eileen Gleeson is set to take temporary charge for the upcoming Nations League games against Northern Ireland and Hungary.

Tottenham are out of the English League Cup.

They were beaten 5-3 on penalties by Fulham last night.

In the pick of the other ties, Matt Doherty scored twice as Wolves defeated Blackpool 5-0.

And Salford City knocked out Leeds United on penalties.

In the competition tonight, Chelsea host Wimbledon, Everton go to Doncaster, Nottingham Forest host Burnley, Sheffield United are at home to Lincoln City and it's Harrogate Town versus Blackburn Rovers.
