Membership applications could be submitted today
Swedish and Finnish foreign ministers are to travel to Turkey for talks on NATO membership.
It's after Turkey's president said it would object to them joining his country in the military alliance, over their failure to respond well to extradition requests.
Formal applications from Sweden and Finland could be submitted to NATO headquarters as soon as today.
Former Defence Force member, Senator Gerard Craughwell, says the process is likely to be completed fairly quickly once all current members agree:
#Finland🇫🇮 and #Sweden🇸🇪 are #NATO’s closest partners.

If they decide to apply, this would be a historic moment.
Their membership would increase our shared security, demonstrate that NATO’s door is open, and that aggression does not pay@jensstoltenberg | #ForMin pic.twitter.com/h2UkftUYGG
