Major General Sean Clancy will take up his post in September.
Cabinet has agreed to appoint a new Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces.
Major General Sean Clancy of the Air Corp, a graduate of Maynooth University and the Curragh's Defence Forces Training School, will take over from Vice Admiral Mark Mellett at the end of September.
The appointment was confirmed by Defence Minister Simon Coveney earlier
