FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.

AkiDwA has renewed it calls for an action plan on female genital mutilation.

Central Statistics Office data, from 2016, indicates 5,790 women and girls in Ireland have been subjected to the practice.

It involves the full or partial removal of labia and or vulva, and may involve the full or partial removal of the clitoris, without medical justification or need.

FGM is often conducted on very young girls, and on women, without their consent

The World Health Organisations "The practice is mostly carried out by traditional circumcisers, who often play other central roles in communities, such as attending childbirths."

It adds "FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women"

Dr. Caroline Munyi is Migrant Women's Health Co-Cordinator at AkiDwA.

She joined Clem Ryan on Thursday's edition of Kildare Today.
