A Former Army Ranger has said the decision to deploy the army to Dublin Airport is inappropriate.
The reason the army are being drafted into the airport is because "you can pay a soldier less than the national minimum wage and get away with it," that's according to an Independent TD for Kildare -South .
Former Army Ranger Cathal Berry has hit out at the decision to put soldiers on standby as "inappropriate" and believes Dublin Airport staff are standing in solidarity with solider's by refusing to work with them at airport security.
Deputy Berry was adamant that private security firms should be hired to deal with staff shortages in Dublin Airport and not the army.
He said the Defence Forces are the ones in crisis with staffing levels down to just 8,300.
However, the DAA has insisted the contingency plan will only be triggered if absenteeism in airport security reaches over 20 per cent.
Members of the Defence Forces are being trained up in the event they're needed to help temporarily.
The move has raised concerns among staff, and SIPTU has got assurances jobs won't be under threat.
