The Blueway, celebrated for its family-friendly environment, now faces mounting apprehension among regular users
An alleged disturbing incident unfolded on the Barrow Blueway in Athy, as a local resident, identified as George, confronted individuals participating in sulky racing, only to be met with threats of being thrown into the adjacent canal.
George recounted the encounter on Kildare Today, stating, "We were walking when we encountered four individuals on sulkies speeding along. When we confronted them, they threatened to throw us into the f***ing canal."
George's concerns extend beyond his own safety to that of families and children who utilise the Blueway.
He emphasised the lack of deterrents against reckless racing, noting the perilous choices pedestrians face when confronted with speeding sulkies. "You either jump into the ditch or jump into the canal," he remarked, expressing frustration at the unacceptable risks posed by the ongoing racing activities.
The Blueway, popular among families, now faces mounting apprehension among regular users. Incidents like these are contributing to a sense of fear and frustration among residents who frequent the pathway for leisure activities, George said.
Local councillor Aoife Breslin echoed community concerns, condemning the actions of a minority who "disregard public safety". Breslin pledged to convene a meeting with Kildare County Council, Waterways Ireland, and the Gardai to address the escalating tensions.
"I will ensure measures are implemented," she said.
Breslin issued a stern warning to sulky racers, urging them to respect the rights and safety of others. "Stay away from there because you are infringing on other people's enjoyment," she said.
