The bill has been tabled by Sinn Fein Senator, Lynn Boylan.
A bill seeking to remove Housing Assistance Payments in assessment of income when applying for civil legal aid is being debated in the Seanad tonight.
The bill has been tabled by Sinn Fein Senator, Lynn Boylan.
There are, currently, 2,398 active HAP tenancies in Kildare, and 59,821, nationwide.
HAP payments go directly to landlords, and not the tenant.
If anyone in receipt of the payment applies for civil legal aid, HAP is counted as part of their income.
Senator Boylan, speaking to Kildare Today, outlines why this is problematic.
Senator Boylan joined Clem Ryan on Monday's edition of the programme, where they began by discussing congregation of people in various urban locations across Ireland over the weekend.
So ahead of my Bill on Monday it appears that the Government have moved and instructed the Legal Aid Board to now disregard HAP. This is amazing news for all the people who have been affected by this. https://t.co/Ya7MSpxcJP https://t.co/8eUCIWw1uz
