A 27-year-old woman from Clane, Sophie Ní Choimín, has started a hunger strike until the Occupied Territories Bill becomes law and food aid is allowed into Gaza.
Now living in Galway, Ní Choimín has been actively involved in protests and fundraising for Palestine but says these efforts are no longer enough due to the Israeli blockade imposed in March, which has blocked aid supplies.
She told the Irish Independent that the blockade has made fundraising ineffective and that her hunger strike is a radical but peaceful way to show solidarity with starving children in Gaza.
The UN has warned that a quarter of Gaza’s 2.3 million people face famine, and recent reports indicate that dozens of children and elderly have died from starvation-related causes.
Ní Choimín is calling on the Irish Government to sign the Occupied Territories Bill into law and to increase international pressure on Israel to allow food into Gaza.
She has informed politicians about her decision and says she will not eat again until food aid reaches the people of Gaza.
While her family is concerned about her health, Ní Choimín said she has received widespread support from communities and social media across Ireland.
