Members of the municipal district have agreed to write to Irish Rail asking them to investigate the feasibility of preparing a medium-term plan for the re-opening of Kildangan Train Station.
The old station closed in 1963 and was on the Waterford train line.
Sinn Féin Councillor for Kildare-Newbridge MD Noel Connolly raised a motion about the station at a recent meeting.
Speaking on Kildare Today, Cllr Connolly said that the increasing population in the area has prompted the need for the station:
"The population of Kildangan has doubled over the last 10 years, Kildare County Council recently voted to rezone land in Kildangan, and that could account for an additional 100 homes, so it's set to grow at a higher rate."
Cllr Connolly also referenced the strain on parking in Kildare Town, adding that the train station could help with "climate action goals".
He said that many people in the area and it's hinterlands would have the option to take the train, saying that car parks in Kildare Town are "oversubscribed".
In response to Deputy Ní Raghallaigh's recent Dáil question, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has spoken in recent days about the feasibility of reopening the station in the context of a strategic rail review for the Greater Dublin area.
Cllr Connolly also said that the members of the MD had agreed to write a letter to Irish Rail with a view to investigating the feasibility for the re-opening of the station.
