The fallout from the suspension of funding for nearly 500 social homes escalated today as the issue was raised in the Dáil.
Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore called on the Taoiseach to explain why construction-ready developments - including major projects in Athy and Blessington - were abruptly halted.
The funding freeze, announced by the Department of Housing, has stalled six sites across four counties.
Among them: 79 homes in Athy and 106 in Blessington.
Both had full planning permission and were weeks away from breaking ground.
Last week, Kfm issued a number of questions seeking clarity around the issue.
However, we were informed that some of the information would be deemed too "commercially sensitive".
“These homes had full planning permission and were construction-ready. The decision to pull the plug on them, without warning, has left local councils and communities in limbo,” Whitmore told the Dáil.
The Government has defended the decision on “value for money” grounds.
But local representatives say that’s hard to justify during a housing emergency - especially given the developments had passed financial assessments twice.
A consortium of developers had already invested more than €8 million in planning and site work.
A workforce of 1,400 had been lined up for 18 months of construction.
In Athy, contractors were ready, with jobs expected to follow.
Labour Cllr Aoife Breslin said the homes were urgently needed and the cancellation has hit the town hard.
Speaking to Kfm earlier today, she described the situation as “shocking” and said the Minister has yet to meet with local representatives.
According to The Journal, industry leaders warn the move could chill investor confidence in Ireland’s social housing pipeline.
Four other PPP housing schemes have also been paused.
