One resident said her son's car is a 'write off' after he hit a ditch to avoid an oncoming car.
Local residents living along the busy route near Victoria Bridge in Thomastown are expressing growing concerns about the safety of the area, citing a series of accidents and near misses at the dangerous junction.
Martina Kelly, a resident in the vicinity, shared her experience last Wednesday when her son fell victim to the intersection at 7pm.
According to Martina, a car suddenly pulled out, forcing her son to swerve to avoid a collision.
The manoeuvre resulted in his car hitting a ditch and being declared a 'write off'.
Witnessing the frequent incidents, Martina emphasised the urgent need for improved signage in the area.
Despite the presence of a stop sign, she observed that many vehicles were not adhering to the traffic regulations, putting lives at risk.
Local Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer highlighted the complexities of the junction, particularly the restricted signage leading cars down from Caragh.
She stressed the need to address the issue of speed, pointing out that the current limit of 80 km/h was inappropriate for the conditions.
She also noted an obstructive high hedge, proposing that its height be lowered to enhance visibility for drivers.
Martina said heavy traffic flow in the area is a big problem.
She suggested the installation of flashing lights and additional signage, emphasising the absence of speed-monitoring cameras.
She said HGVs attempting to navigate the route, often encounter difficulties when meeting oncoming traffic.
She said it is a catastrophe in waiting.
Residents have repeatedly called for action, with the location being identified as a "blackspot" by Gardai.
