Kildare County Council is preparing to submit an application for government funding to carry out safety works at Dagweld’s Cross in Blackwood.
The move follows confirmation from the Department of Transport that the junction, which links Prosperous and Allenwood, has been officially designated a "dangerous" location under a national safety analysis of regional roads.
That designation makes the site eligible for a Specific Improvement Grant to support redesign works.
The announcement comes as two crashes in two days intensified pressure for action at what has long been regarded as one of the county’s worst black spots.
The Council has already set aside some money for improvements, including measures to boost visibility, but says it cannot complete the project without additional funding.
Residents, who have campaigned for years for a solution, say they are frustrated at delays and warn that it is only a matter of time before another serious incident occurs.
Kildare North Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly wrote to the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Sean Canney, and the Council’s Chief Executive to press for progress.
Deputy Farrelly confirmed that application for funding is now being prepared by the council.
"Both Cllr Paula Mulroe and I have continued to raise this issue at every opportunity, and look forward to seeing the Council successfully drawing down funding to do works at this site," he said.
