A man who died after the car he was driving entered a canal in Kilmeague has been named locally as Jason Hallahan.
The incident occurred at Grangeclare West, Kilmeague at around 8pm last night near the Travellers Rest Pub.
Speaking to Kfm, local Fianna Fáil councillor Darragh Fitzpatrick said that the incident was a "terrible tragedy".
He said the "community is in mourning" and that it is a "dark day" in the run up to Christmas.

A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Monday (Dec. 30th) in Newlands Cross Crematorium Chapel at 2:30pm, followed by cremation
Gardaí are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward.
