There’s been a sharp rise in the number of people in Kildare receiving disability-related social welfare payments over the past five years.
Figures from the Department of Social Protection show that 6,529 people in Kildare are now receiving Disability Allowance - a payment for people with long-term illnesses or disabilities.
That’s an increase of more than 1,000 people since 2020.

The Blind Pension continues to have the lowest uptake, with just 29 recipients recorded in Kildare this year.
In the first quarter of 2020, 115 people in Kildare were in receipt of the Injury Benefit.
By the same period in 2025, that figure had dropped to 33 — a decrease of more than 70%.
The data also shows a significant jump in the number of Garda vehicles written off, rising from 15 in 2024 to 41 last year, with two more write-offs recorded in January.
